The absolutely amazing Crystal Cave is the most famous of the many caves in Bermuda, and also sits close to Castle Harbor, in Hamilton Parish.
The geological marvel is roughly 1,640 ft (500 m) long and 203 ft (62 m) deep. The lower 65 ft (20 m) are below the water level. Yet, when the cave originally formed it was, however, above sea level. Now many of the caves features are underwater.
Crystal Cave is famous for its many splendorous stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal clear pools. Lamentably, earthquakes have damaged some of the features and formations in the past.
Crystal Cave Formation and Discovery
The cave formed millions of years ago. The exact time frame and method of formation are not clear. Perhaps the principal force behind its formation was erosion.
At the time of its formation, all of Crystal Cave was at or above sea level. At the end of the last ice age, rising ocean waters inundated the cave, submerging many portions of the cave.
The discovery of the cave happened in 1905. Two young boys accidentally discovered Crystal Cave on their property while searching for a lost cricket ball. What are the odds?
